As you read and peruse the various hunting magazines, you might get the idea that the number one destination for trophy pronghorn is in New Mexico. A couple of things you might want to keep in mind is that the writers for these magazines are paid to go on hunts, and are invited by various outfitters so that they will write something (hopefully favorable) about their hunting experience in their magazines.

However, if you are able to get your hands on Boone and Crockett Club's Big Game Awards Book (mine was the 26th edition from 2004-2006) you will find that by looking at the records and statistics that if you want to bag a trophy class pronghorn buck, the best state for pronghorn hunting is Wyoming.

The B&C book has 14 pages of pronghorn records – OK, there are pictures that take up some of the space – and has about 405 total listings. Out of those listing, 139 (or 34%) record bucks were taken in Wyoming. Out of that 139, 60 (43%) of those record bucks came from Carbon County - which indicates that the best county for hunting pronghorn antelope is Carbon County. As a matter of fact, the first listing from Wyoming is indeed a Carbon County buck that was taken in 2005, scored 89 4/8, and is ranked 6th. The next Wyoming buck is ranked 9th, scoring 88 6/8, and was taken in 2006 The next two listings are again from Carbon County, and ranked 12th and 13th.

The remainder of the Wyoming counties come in way behind Carbon County in the records. Sweetwater County is the next highest county for pronghorn records, but it only has 16 listings, as compared to Carbon's 60. Natrona County is next with 15 listings, and Fremont with 14.

If you're looking for a trophy class buck, it would be useful to be able to assess an animal through your binoculars or a spotting scope. You'll want to look for a buck that has a rack of 14 to 15 inches or more, in height. A Boone & Crockett scoring page can be found here.
